Annual P&T Competition
A record 67 schools of pharmacy nationwide participated in the 2019 Annual National Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition for Student Pharmacists, organized by AMCP Foundation. Eight national finalists advanced to AMCP Annual Meeting, where a panel of judges simulated a P&T Committee during live finals. In addition to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams, 2019 finalist teams hailed from Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy; University of California, San Francisco; University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy; and University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy.
Thank You to Our Partners!
Our lead funding partner for the 2019 Competition was Genentech, Inc., with additional support from Supernus Pharmaceuticals. The study drug was TYMLOS® (abaloparatide) injection, indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture. The AMCP Foundation thanks manufacturer Radius Health, Inc., for facilitating use of this dossier and Xcenda/Dymaxium for hosting the Competition platform on AMCP eDossier.

- The AMCP Foundation National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition is designed to provide an immersive experience in the skills necessary for effective formulary review and management.
- The P&T Competition is a team event. The ideal team has four members in different years of the pharmacy curriculum.
- Members of P&T Competition teams work together on assignments that include (1) a written evaluation of the competition drug, including recommendations for formulary placement and (2) an oral summary presentation supported by PowerPoint slides.
- Each pharmacy school/college may enter one team into the national competition. If more than one team is interested in competing, a single team must be selected (typically the winner of a local competition).
- During the national competition semi-final round, national judges appointed by the AMCP Foundation evaluate and score the assignments submitted by each team. The top-scoring teams advance to the final round of competition, which culminates in live presentations at the AMCP Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy Annual Meeting. The first, second, and third place teams are announced during a special event at the meeting.
- Through the generosity of the P&T Competition funding partners, the AMCP Foundation may extend honoraria to each national finalist team and/or the winning teams.
Formulary management is an integrated patient care process that enables physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals to work together to promote clinically sound, cost-effective medication therapy and positive therapeutic outcomes. Formulary management systems are used routinely by health plans, pharmacy benefit management companies (PBMs), hospitals, and government agencies (including the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Defense, and Medicare and Medicaid programs).
A drug formulary is a continually updated list of medications and related products supported by current evidence-based medicine and the judgment of physicians, pharmacists, and other experts in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and preservation of health. The overall goal is to develop a list of the safest, most effective medications that will produce the desired goals of therapy at the most reasonable cost to the health care system.
Primary responsibility for developing, managing, updating, and administering the drug formulary rests with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. The P&T Committee also designs and implements formulary system policies on utilization and access to medications.
Pharmacists who serve on or provide support to P&T Committees must understand how to evaluate the best available scientific, clinical, and economic evidence on medication use. They also must be able to determine the impact of medication use on patient population outcomes, conduct cost/benefit analyses, and relate drug therapy choices to current practice guidelines.
The P&T Competition was created to introduce student pharmacists to the skills necessary for effective formulary review and management. By participating in the P&T Competition, student pharmacists gain experience in gathering and critically analyzing scientific, clinical, and economic evidence in a systematic and rigorous fashion. They also hone written and oral communication skills that are increasingly important in today’s health care environment.
